Including yoga in your daily routine can be good for your back health. Yoga can give you greater flexibility and mobility. One yoga pose that is recommended to strengthen the back is the spinal twist. Most of the yoga poses will increase the flexibility of your spine in a forward-backward position but only a few increase lateral flexibility as well. The spinal twist does this as well as improves the response of spinal nerves. This pose should be done while maintaining an erect spine and making a sideways circular motion. The shoulders are kept level throughout the twist movement. Attention should be given to the breath, to keep it balanced while increasing the twist motion upon each exhalation. Begin the spinal twist pose by kneeling on the floor. Keep your legs together and rest your buttocks on the soles of your feet. Now move your upper body over your feet to the right; lift one leg and place it over the other putting your foot next to your knee. Maintain a straight erect spine throughout the twist. Complete the twist by bringing your right arm onto your knee. Your left hand is resting behind you and your head is turned to look over your left shoulder. Hold onto your left foot with your hand. This position comprises the spinal twist pose and is recommended for general internal massage as well as strengthening the spine. |
